EAST WINDOWS IN THE SANCTUARY

The most outstanding windows are the group of four, set in a niche around the large cross above the marble altar which was originally positioned against the wall so that the pastor's back was to the congregation. The colors of the windows are rich and strong, with reds and blues predominating, and as the morning sun shines through these windows, the effect is that of an illuminated tapestry, an idea that has been carried forward in the illuminated manuscripts of the Narthex that are the Poovey Memorial.

The design of the East Windows is based on the names of Christ recorded in the Bible. Those that emphasize his humanity are on the left side and those that emphasize his divinityare on the right. Our story begins with the upper left window. The medallion portrays the infant Jesus and His mother, Mary, and thus symbolized Jesus, the Son of Man. In the upper right window is a medallion showing the head of Jesus, ascended in power and might, thus stressing Jesus, the Son of God.

The lower left window has, in the center, Jesus as the Good Shepherd, carrying the lambs. Above this are four symbols set in an ellipse - a lion, a rose, a lily and the jeweled breast-plate of the Israelite High Priest. These indicate that Jesus is called the lion of the tribe of Judah, The rose of Sharon, The son of Mary whose symbol is the lily, and the high-priest.

Below the picture of the Good Shepherd are three more symbols - a throne and six-pointed star; a hammer, chisel and nails; and the tablets containing the Ten Commandments and a scroll. These remind the worshiper that Jesus is called
the Son of David, the son of a carpenter and a prophet like unto Moses, who gave the Law.

In the center of the lower right window is an angel pointing to an empty tomb and thus representing Jesus as
The Resurrection and the Life. In the ellipse above are four symbols - the lamb seated on the seven sealed book, a bright star shining through a cloud, a basket containing loaves of bread, and a grapevine. These emphasize Jesus as the Lamb of God, the bright and morning star, the bread of life, and the vine.
