NORTH WINDOWS IN THE SANCTUARY

The nave windows are large, measuring six feet in width by thirteen feet in height. The lower panels use to open outward as casement windows in the days before air conditioning when the sanctuary was cooled with exhaust fans, the upper sections are stationary and all are now sealed on the exterior with acrylic for protection and preservation.

The glass in these windows is not as elaborate in design as the group of four in the East Window, yet here too there is uniqueness in theme and appearance. Each window illustrates a famous Christian hymn, the opening line of which is printed at the bottom of the upper sash. Each of the two upper panels contains a stained glass medallion illustrating some portion of the hymn.

A blue border of Blenko glass and a narrow inner border of rose tinted glass frame each section and the rose trim is used around each medallion with the blue Blenko glass as background. The main portion of each window is vari-colored Cathedral glass in a granite finish, cut in a diamond pattern and set in lead. In conformity to the style of such work, some of the diamonds have been deliberately broken and patched to add variety to the pattern.

Communion Window

The first window on the north side, the east end could be called the Communion Window and is based on the hymn: Thy Table I Approach, Dear Savior Hear My Prayer. A golden communion cup, surrounded by stalks of wheat, forms the first medallion on the left. The second, on the right, shows Albrecht Durer's famous picture of hands raised in prayer. The hymn is #47 in the American Lutheran Hymnal (1930)

Creation Window

The Creation Window is based on the hymn: Beautiful Savior, King of Creation-The familiar letters ihs (which are the first 3 letters in the Greek spelling of Jesus) set in a golden circle and surrounded by tongues of light symbolize Jesus, the Beautiful Savior of the hymn. The other picture is a beautiful woodland scene containing trees, flowers, a meadow and a lake. This illustrates the line of the hymn: "Fair are the meadows, fairer the woodlands, robed in flowers of blooming spring." The hymn is #518 in the Lutheran Book of Worship.

Nativity Window

Silent Night, Holy Night is the hymn of the Nativity Window. Two familiar Christmas scenes are pictured in this window. The first shows the manger and the star, with Bethlehem in the background.   In the second, two angels are portrayed in the heavens and below them are sheep and the shepherds' crooks, indicating the presence of the shepherds who heard the first Christmas hymn. The hymn is #65 in the Lutheran Book of Worship

Reformation Window

The Reformation Window features A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. Luther's famous hymn is pictured by a great fortress, set high on a rock and surrounded by water. The second medallion contains the well known Luther seal and thus refers to the author of the hymn. The hymn is #229 in the Lutheran Book of Worship.

Death Window

Abide With Me, Fast Falls the Eventide is the hymn of the last window on the north side at the west end. It is called the Death Window because it speaks of our humanity and frailty. The setting sun, casting long shadows on the shore of a lake portrays the opening line of the hymn in the first medallion. The second scene is based on the lines in verse 3, "Change and decay in all around I see, 0 Thou who changest not, abide with me." The ruined castle, the crumbled temple and the blasted tree portray the "change and decay"' but towering above the scene is the cross of Christ, triumphant and unchanging. The hymn is #272 in the Lutheran Book of Worship.
