SOUTH WINDOWS IN THE SANCTUARY

Baptism Window

The theme hymn is Jesus, Savior, Wondrous Mild. The first symbol, that of a dove descending, teaches that the Holy Spirit comes to the Christian through baptism. The second emblem is an open book with a quill pen beside it, and this is suggested by the last line of the hymn: "Write the name that we have given in the Book of Life in heaven."  The hymn is #40 in the American Lutheran Hymnal (1930). When the Sanctuary was dedicated in 1950 the baptismal font was positioned on a raised platform beneath this window.

Passion Window

The second window on the south is the Passion Window that depicts the events of Holy Week. The theme hymn is 0 Sacred Heai4 Now Wounded. The crown of thorns and the three square-headed nails in the first medallion are self-explanatory. The three crosses on a hill, with light from heaven striking the central cross is suggested by the concluding verse of the hymn where the author, Paul Gerhardt, expresses the wish that his dying eyes may gaze upon the Crucified One. The hymn is #117 in the Lutheran Book of Worship.

Resurrection Window

Christ is Risen from the Dead is the Easter hymn of the Resurrection Window. It is set opposite the one celebrating Christ's birth. The ancient symbol of the bursting pomegranate is used to show Christ come forth from the tomb. The second medallion shows a golden crown and palms of victory, indicating Christ's triumph over death. The hymn is #430 in the American Lutheran Hymnal (1930).

Trinity Window

The hymn of the Trinity Window is Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. The first panel seeks to typify the Trinity through the triangle, the interlocking circles of eternity, the three-leafed shamrock or clover and three tongues of flame. The hymn contains the line: "Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea," and this scene from the Book of Revelation is portrayed in the second medallion, with four crowns being pictured falling on a sea of glass. The hymn is #165 in the Lutheran Book of Worship.

Hope Window

Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me is the hymn of the Hope Window. Two striking pictures are used to illustrate this popular hymn. The first shows a stormy scene and one can almost hear the rumble of the thunder and the answering roar of the sea, but the rock of ages stands unmoved and contains a cleft where the believer can be sheltered.  The other medallion is based on the line in verse 3: "Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling." It pictures the sinner holding fast to the cross of Christ in the midst of storm and trouble. The hymn is #327 in the Lutheran Book of Worship
